Professional Pool Filter Cleaning Starting at $90

Your pool filter collects dirt, leaves, algae, oils and other material every time the water circulates. As that buildup increases, water flow can slow down and the filter may have a harder time keeping the pool clear.

El Dorado Pool Cleaning provides one-time professional pool-filter cleaning for cartridge, DE and sand filters.

We inspect the filter, clean it according to its type, check the internal components, reassemble the system and compare the starting and final pressure readings.

Filter cleaning starts at $90. No weekly-service commitment is required.

Serving El Dorado Hills, Cameron Park, Placerville, Shingle Springs, Folsom, Granite Bay and Roseville.

What Is Included in Pool Filter Cleaning?

The exact process depends on whether your pool uses a cartridge, diatomaceous earth or sand filter.

A typical filter-cleaning appointment may include:

  • Recording the starting filter pressure

  • Turning off the system and safely relieving pressure

  • Opening and inspecting the filter

  • Removing the cartridges or DE grid assembly

  • Thoroughly rinsing the filter elements

  • Chemically deep-cleaning them when needed

  • Inspecting cartridges, grids and internal components

  • Inspecting and lubricating the tank O-ring

  • Reassembling the filter

  • Restarting and testing the system

  • Checking for visible leaks

  • Recording the final pressure

If we find a damaged cartridge, DE grid, pressure gauge, seal or other replaceable part, we’ll give you a quote before replacing it. Replacement parts are billed separately and installed only with your approval.

Cartridge Filter Cleaning

Cartridge filters trap debris in pleated filter elements inside the tank. As the pleats fill with dirt, oils and other material, water has a harder time passing through them.

Our cartridge filter-cleaning process includes:

* Recording the starting pressure
* Safely opening the filter tank
* Removing the cartridges
* Rinsing between the pleats with controlled water pressure
* Chemically deep-cleaning the cartridges when buildup requires it
* Inspecting the cartridges for tears, collapsed pleats or other damage
* Inspecting and lubricating the tank O-ring
* Reassembling the filter
* Restarting the system and checking for leaks
* Recording the final pressure

A cartridge that is torn, cracked or badly worn may need to be replaced instead of cleaned. We’ll show you what we found and provide a replacement quote before doing additional work.

DE Filter Cleaning

A DE filter uses a grid assembly coated with diatomaceous earth powder to capture very small particles.

Backwashing may remove some buildup, but the grids still need to be removed and cleaned periodically so they can be properly inspected.

Our DE filter-cleaning process may include:

* Recording the starting pressure
* Opening the filter tank
* Removing and cleaning the grid assembly
* Chemically deep-cleaning the grids when needed
* Inspecting the grids for tears or damage
* Inspecting the internal assembly
* Inspecting and lubricating the tank O-ring
* Reassembling the filter
* Adding the correct amount of fresh DE powder
* Restarting and testing the system
* Recording the final pressure

Damaged DE grids or internal parts are quoted separately and replaced only with your approval.

Sand Filter Cleaning

Sand filters collect debris as pool water passes through the filter media. Routine backwashing reverses the water flow and carries trapped material out through the waste line.

Our sand filter service may include:

* Recording the starting pressure
* Inspecting the filter and multiport valve
* Backwashing the filter
* Completing the rinse cycle
* Chemically deep-cleaning the sand when needed
* Returning the system to normal filtration
* Testing the system
* Recording the final pressure

Over time, sand can become clumped, channeled or too worn to filter properly. Sand-media replacement is available when cleaning and backwashing are no longer enough. We’ll inspect the filter and discuss the next step with you.

How Do I Know My Pool Filter Needs Cleaning?

The pressure gauge is one of the best ways to monitor a pool filter.

Many filter manufacturers recommend cleaning when the pressure rises approximately 10 PSI above the clean starting pressure. Your specific filter may have different instructions, so the manufacturer’s recommendation should always be followed.

Other signs may include:

* Weaker water flow from the pool returns
* Reduced skimmer suction
* A pool cleaner that moves slowly
* Water that remains cloudy
* Longer filtration times
* A filter pressure that stays unusually high
* The pressure quickly returning after a recent cleaning
* Debris returning to the pool

These symptoms can also be caused by pump, plumbing, valve or equipment problems. If cleaning doesn’t correct the issue, we’ll let you know what we observed.

Why Record the Starting and Final Pressure?

Your clean-filter pressure gives you a baseline for monitoring the system.

We record the pressure before cleaning and check it again after the filter has been reassembled and restarted. This helps show whether removing the buildup improved flow through the filter.

If the pressure remains unusually high or low after cleaning, another part of the circulation system may need attention.

How Often Should a Pool Filter Be Cleaned?

There isn’t one schedule that works for every pool.

Cleaning frequency depends on:

* Filter type and size
* Pool size
* Amount of leaves and debris
* Swimmer use
* Algae or cloudy-water problems
* Nearby trees and landscaping
* Construction dust, smoke or storms
* The filter’s clean starting pressure
* Manufacturer recommendations

The pressure gauge and water flow usually provide better guidance than the calendar alone. A heavily used pool surrounded by trees may need more frequent cleaning than a lightly used pool with little debris.

When Is Chemical Deep Cleaning Needed?

A normal water rinse removes loose dirt and debris. Some filters also develop oils, scale or other buildup that doesn’t rinse away easily.

When we find that type of buildup, we may recommend a chemical deep cleaning. It is used only when needed rather than automatically applying chemicals to every filter.

We’ll explain what we found and whether an additional cleaning step is recommended.

What Pool Filter Cleaning Does—and Doesn’t—Fix

A proper cleaning can remove accumulated debris, restore a clean pressure baseline and help water move through the filter more freely.

Cleaning cannot repair:

* Torn or worn cartridges
* Damaged DE grids
* Broken pressure gauges
* Cracked filter tanks
* Failing valves
* Worn seals
* Pump or plumbing problems
* Sand that needs to be replaced

If we find damaged parts, we’ll provide a quote before replacing anything. You stay in control of any additional work.

Pool Filter Cleaning Prices

Professional pool-filter cleaning starts at $90.

The final price depends on:

* Filter type
* Filter size
* Number and condition of the elements
* Amount of buildup
* Whether chemical deep cleaning is needed
* Access to the equipment
* DE powder required
* Any approved replacement parts
* Whether sand-media replacement is needed

We’ll confirm the price based on your filter before beginning additional work.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • 1 How much does pool-filter cleaning cost?

    Pool-filter cleaning starts at $90. The final price depends on the filter type, size, condition and whether additional deep cleaning, DE powder, sand replacement or parts are needed.

  • 2 What types of pool filters do you clean?

    We clean cartridge, DE and sand pool filters.

  • 3 How do I know when my pool filter needs cleaning?

    Check the pressure against the clean starting pressure recorded after the previous cleaning. Many manufacturers recommend cleaning at approximately 10 PSI above that baseline. Weak return flow, reduced skimmer suction and cloudy water can also indicate that the filter needs attention.

  • 4 How often should a cartridge filter be cleaned?

    It depends on the filter size, debris load, pool use and pressure. Monitor the pressure gauge and follow the filter manufacturer’s recommendations instead of relying only on a fixed calendar schedule.

  • 5 Is backwashing a sand filter the same as deep cleaning it?

    No. Backwashing removes trapped debris by reversing water through the filter. A chemical deep cleaning may be needed when oils, scale or other buildup remain in the sand after normal backwashing.

  • 6 Does a DE filter need new DE powder after cleaning?

    Yes. DE powder coats the grids and is part of the filtration process. Fresh DE powder is added after the filter is cleaned and reassembled.

  • 7 Do you chemically clean every filter?

    No. We use chemical deep cleaning only when the condition of the filter elements or sand calls for it.

  • 8 Can you replace damaged cartridges or DE grids?

    Yes. If we find damaged parts, we’ll provide a quote and get your approval before replacing them. Parts are billed separately.

  • 9 Do you replace sand-filter media?

    Yes. Sand-media replacement is available when the existing media is no longer performing properly. We’ll inspect the filter and discuss whether cleaning or replacement makes more sense.

  • 10 Can a dirty filter cause cloudy pool water?

    A dirty filter can contribute to cloudy water by reducing circulation and limiting the filter’s ability to remove particles. Cloudy water can also come from algae, poor water chemistry or other equipment problems.

  • 11 Do I have to be a weekly pool-service customer?

    No. Filter cleaning is available as a one-time service to any pool owner in our service area.
